Use of petrol powered blower for cleaning leaves, litter, dust and loose debris from car park surfaces; includes carrying equipment, refuelling, petrol storage in Armorgard secure box, operation near vehicles and pedestrians, and secure storage after use

Petrol blower must not be used in enclosed or substantially enclosed sections unless ventilation has been assessed as adequate by a competent person. Use battery or electric blower, sweeping, or mechanical ventilation for enclosed areas. Operator to stop work and leave area if headache, dizziness, nausea or irritation occurs.

Petrol stored only in approved fuel containers with caps secure. Store containers inside locked Armorgard secure fuel box away from drains, ignition sources, heat, smoking areas and vehicle impact. Keep minimum quantity required for the shift.

Armorgard box to be kept locked when not actively accessing equipment. Keys held only by authorised staff. Equipment and fuel not left unattended in public areas or vehicle bays.

Use FFP2 or FFP3 dust mask where dust is generated. Avoid dry blowing heavy dust deposits; damp down or sweep where needed. Keep blower nozzle low and direct debris away from people, vehicles, doors and air intakes.

Operator to wear impact rated safety goggles or visor. Maintain exclusion zone around work area and stop immediately if pedestrians, vehicles or animals enter the working area.

Use hearing protection suitable for blower noise level. Limit duration of use, rotate tasks where practicable and follow manufacturer guidance. Avoid use during noise sensitive times where site rules apply.

Use low vibration equipment where available. Maintain equipment in good condition. Limit trigger time and rotate tasks. Operator to report tingling, numbness or loss of grip.

Operator trained to lift and carry safely. Use backpack straps correctly if fitted. Do not carry excessive fuel. Use trolley or two person lift where distance, stairs or awkward access make carrying unsafe.

Pre use visual inspection of work area. Wear slip resistant safety footwear. Work facing direction of travel where practicable. Keep good visibility and avoid walking backwards near ramps, kerbs or vehicle routes.

Before first use

Set exclusion zone using cones or signage. Stop blower when anyone approaches. Direct debris away from pedestrians, parked vehicles, windows and doorways.

Refuel outdoors or in a well ventilated open area only. Switch engine off and allow hot parts to cool before refuelling. Wear nitrile gloves when handling fuel. Use spout or funnel. Clean spills immediately and dispose of contaminated material safely.

Only trained authorised staff to use blower. Complete pre use checks for fuel leaks, damaged guards, loose parts, straps and controls. Do not use defective equipment. Maintain according to manufacturer instructions.

Blower to be switched off, cooled and checked for leaks before storage. Store securely in locked area or Armorgard box as appropriate. Fuel container kept upright and separated from ignition sources. Area kept tidy so equipment does not obstruct escape routes.
