Use of Electrical Cleaning Equipment
Persons exposed
Type of assessment
Hazards and control measures
Hazard
• Electrical Faults Leading to fire or electric shock.
• Equipment checked before use User should carry out physical inspection of cables plugs and casing on a daily basis to identify mechanical damage.
• RCD in place All equipment will have a residual current device inserted in the mains electric supply to it.
• Regular PAT testing All electrical appliances to be Portable Appliance Tested (PAT) at regular and appropriate intervals.
Hazard
• Fire Caused by naked flame, faulty electrical equipment or systems, arson, explosion or chemical means.
Hazard
• Hazardous Substances Exposure to non-controlled, potentially hazardous substances.
• Any chemicals used in conjunction with the equipment identified as hazardous will be subject to a separate COSHHH assessment 123abc-1
Hazard
• Manual handling Tall, awkward & unwieldy loads that are difficult to lift, transport and handle.
• All equipment will be of such size and weight that it can be safely handles by one operator
• Empty vacuum cleaner bags Ensure that vacuum cleaner bags are emptied regularly, at least daily to reduce the weight when moving.
• Equipment checked before use Operators will inspect the condition of wheeled equipment. Faulty equipment will be withdrawn from use.
• Risk assessment carried out if weight is too much for one operator Where by necessity it is too large or heavy for one operator to handle safely, a manual handling risk assessment will be carried out and specific control measures applied e.g. Mechanical handling aids, two people etc..
Hazard
• Slips & Trips Can occur if there is poor housekeeping within the workplace, also areas that are inadequately lit.
• All equipment will be returned after use
• Areas kept clear Equipment will be sited so as not to create obstructions when in use.
• Avoid Trailing Cables Electric cables will be run so as to avoid creating trip hazards.
• Operators will wear shoes of a non-slip nature Footwear can be important in preventing slips in the workplace and selecting the correct shoe sole can have a big effect on reducing slip injuries.
• Warning Signs Displayed Warning notices will be posted where it is not possible to avoid trailing cables in the general work area and to warn of wet floors.
Hazard
• Trapping/Entanglement Inadequate guarding on machinery could lead to operative getting clothing caught in the machinery.
• All operatives will be fully trained in the use of equipment, including the changing or replacement of wear parts
• Isolate power Equipment will be folly isolated from the mains electric supply before any parts are replaces or bags cleaned/removes.
