Introduction

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the procedures for safely handling and using irritant chemicals in the workplace. It aims to protect workers from potential health risks associated with exposure to these chemicals and to ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
2

Scope of work

This method statement applies to all activities involving the use, handling, storage, and disposal of irritant chemicals in the workplace. This includes, but is not limited to, cleaning, manufacturing, laboratory work, and maintenance tasks where irritant chemicals are used.
3

Responsibilities

Management: Ensure that irritant chemicals are properly labeled, stored, and used according to safety guidelines. Provide necessary resources, including safety data sheets (SDS) and personal protective equipment (PPE). Supervisors: Monitor the use of irritant chemicals, ensuring that employees follow safety procedures and are adequately trained. Conduct regular safety audits and provide corrective actions where necessary. Employees: Follow the procedures outlined in this method statement when handling irritant chemicals. Use PPE as required and report any incidents or safety concerns to supervisors. Health and Safety Officer: Conduct risk assessments, provide training on chemical safety, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and manage emergency response procedures.
4

Equipment and materials

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Gloves, safety goggles, face shields, aprons, and respirators as appropriate. Irritant Chemicals: Properly labeled containers of the chemicals in use. Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Accessible documents providing information on the chemicals' hazards and safe handling procedures. First Aid Kit: Stocked with materials for treating chemical exposures. Emergency Shower and Eyewash Stations: Located near areas where chemicals are used. Spill Containment Kits: Materials for containing and cleaning up chemical spills. Ventilation Equipment: Fume hoods or exhaust fans to reduce exposure to airborne irritants.
5

Procedure

Preparation: Review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each chemical before use, noting the hazards, required PPE, and first aid measures. Ensure that all required PPE is available and in good condition. Inspect it before use. Check that ventilation systems are operational to control exposure to airborne irritants. Prepare the work area by removing any unnecessary items and ensuring that spill kits and emergency equipment are easily accessible. Chemical Handling: Wear appropriate PPE before handling any irritant chemicals. Use the chemicals in well-ventilated areas or under a fume hood to minimize inhalation risks. Transfer chemicals carefully to avoid spills. Use appropriate tools (e.g., chemical-resistant containers) for measuring and transferring. Never mix chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so, as this can create hazardous reactions. During Use: Monitor the work area for any signs of chemical exposure, such as fumes, odors, or skin irritation. Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. If contact occurs, follow emergency procedures immediately. Keep containers closed when not in use to prevent spills and reduce exposure. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in areas where chemicals are used. Post-Use: Clean up any spills immediately using the spill containment kit, following the procedure outlined in the SDS. Dispose of chemical waste and contaminated PPE in accordance with local regulations. Wash hands and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling chemicals. Store chemicals in their designated storage areas, ensuring they are properly labeled and sealed.
6

Safety precautions

Always wear the appropriate PPE as specified in the SDS for each chemical. Be aware of the location of emergency showers, eyewash stations, and first aid kits. Ensure that ventilation systems are functioning properly before beginning work with irritant chemicals. Never work alone when handling hazardous chemicals; a colleague should be nearby to assist in case of an emergency. Regularly inspect PPE and equipment for damage or wear, replacing items as necessary.
7

Emergency procedures

Chemical Spill: Evacuate the area if necessary, contain the spill using the spill kit, and ventilate the area. Notify the Health and Safety Officer immediately. Skin Contact: Immediately rinse the affected area with copious amounts of water and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Eye Contact: Use an eyewash station to flush the eyes for at least 15 minutes and seek medical assistance immediately. Inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention if breathing difficulties occur. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water and seek immediate medical attention.
8

Environmental considerations

Use the minimum quantity of chemicals necessary for the task to reduce waste. Store chemicals in secure, labeled containers to prevent leaks and accidental exposure. Dispose of chemical waste according to local environmental regulations, ensuring it is not released into the environment. Implement spill prevention measures, such as secondary containment systems, in areas where chemicals are stored or used.
9

Training and competence

Provide comprehensive training to all employees on the safe handling, storage, and disposal of irritant chemicals. Training should include how to interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS), the correct use of PPE, and emergency response procedures. Conduct regular refresher training and competency assessments to ensure that employees maintain their knowledge and skills.
10

Review and monitoring

Supervisors should regularly monitor the use of irritant chemicals to ensure adherence to this method statement. Incident reports involving chemical exposure or spills should be reviewed to identify and correct any safety deficiencies. Conduct regular audits of chemical storage and handling procedures to ensure compliance with safety regulations. This method statement should be reviewed and updated annually or in response to changes in regulations, procedures, or chemicals used.
