Introduction

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the procedures and preventive measures to minimize the risk of slips, trips, and falls on the same level in the workplace. This document aims to protect employees, visitors, and contractors by reducing the likelihood of accidents and ensuring a safe working environment.
2

Scope of work

This method statement applies to all areas of the workplace where there is potential for slips, trips, and falls. It covers walkways, corridors, entrances, stairways, office spaces, and any other locations where individuals may be at risk due to uneven surfaces, obstructions, or environmental conditions.
3

Responsibilities

Management: Ensure that appropriate policies, procedures, and resources are in place to prevent slips, trips, and falls. Review incident reports and implement corrective actions. Health and Safety Officer: Conduct risk assessments, provide training, and monitor compliance with safety procedures related to slips, trips, and falls. Supervisors: Ensure that employees are aware of and follow procedures to prevent slips, trips, and falls. Report any hazards or incidents immediately. Employees: Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and take reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others. Maintenance Team: Regularly inspect and maintain flooring, lighting, and other elements that could contribute to slips, trips, and falls.
4

Equipment and materials

Warning Signs: For indicating wet floors or other hazards. Anti-Slip Mats: For high-risk areas, such as entrances. Cleaning Supplies: Mops, buckets, and appropriate cleaning agents to quickly address spills. Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting in all areas to prevent trips due to poor visibility. Floor Maintenance Tools: Equipment for repairing damaged flooring, such as crack fillers or sealants. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Slip-resistant footwear where required.
5

Procedure

Risk Assessment: Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards that could lead to slips, trips, or falls. Prioritize high-risk areas such as entrances, wet areas, and locations with uneven surfaces. Preventive Measures: Keep walkways clear of obstructions, including cords, boxes, and debris. Ensure that floors are cleaned regularly and that spills are promptly cleaned up. Install anti-slip mats in areas prone to wet conditions, such as entrances and near sinks. Ensure adequate lighting is in place, especially in corridors, stairways, and entrances. Repair any damaged flooring immediately, such as cracked tiles or uneven surfaces. Instruct employees to wear appropriate footwear with good traction, particularly in areas prone to wet conditions. Monitoring and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of floors, walkways, and staircases to identify and rectify potential hazards. Check that all warning signs are in place when necessary (e.g., after mopping floors). Ensure that any temporary obstructions (e.g., cables, tools) are promptly removed after work is completed. Response to Hazards: If a spill occurs, place warning signs around the area and clean it up immediately. Report any damage to flooring or lighting to the maintenance team for immediate repair. Remove or highlight any obstructions that could cause a trip hazard.
6

Safety precautions

Ensure all employees are aware of the locations of high-risk areas and the precautions to take. Use appropriate signage to warn of temporary hazards such as wet floors. Encourage the use of handrails in stairways and other areas where falls could occur. Provide slip-resistant footwear for employees working in areas prone to wet or slippery conditions. Maintain clear and organized workspaces to prevent trips over objects or clutter.
7

Emergency procedures

In the Event of a Fall: Assess the situation to determine if medical assistance is required. Provide first aid if trained and necessary. Report the incident immediately to the Health and Safety Officer or Supervisor. Preserve the incident area for investigation, if possible, to identify the cause. Incident Reporting: Complete an incident report detailing the circumstances of the fall. Investigate the cause and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
8

Environmental considerations

Use eco-friendly cleaning agents when addressing spills to minimize environmental impact. Ensure proper disposal of cleaning waste, following environmental regulations. Consider the use of sustainable materials for flooring that provide better traction and reduce slip risks.
9

Training and competence

Provide regular training for all employees on how to identify and mitigate slip, trip, and fall hazards. Train staff on proper cleaning procedures to ensure spills are managed promptly and effectively. Conduct refresher courses on the use of PPE and the importance of maintaining a clutter-free work environment. Ensure that maintenance staff are trained in floor repair and maintenance techniques.
10

Review and monitoring

Conduct regular audits of workplace areas to ensure compliance with this method statement. Review incident reports to identify trends and areas for improvement. Hold regular safety meetings to discuss any slip, trip, or fall incidents and preventive measures. Update the method statement annually or after any significant incidents to reflect any changes in procedures or regulations.
