Introduction
The purpose of this method statement is to provide clear guidelines and procedures for the safe and effective cleaning of the kitchen area. This ensures that all surfaces are hygienically cleaned to prevent contamination, maintain a safe working environment, and comply with health and safety regulations.

Scope of work
This method statement applies to the cleaning of all areas within the kitchen, including but not limited to: Countertops Cooking appliances (e.g., ovens, stoves, microwaves) Sinks and faucets Floors and walls Refrigerators and freezers (external and internal surfaces) Kitchen utensils and small equipment Storage areas (cupboards, shelves)

Responsibilities
Cleaning Staff: Responsible for carrying out the cleaning tasks according to the specified procedure. Supervisor/Manager: Ensures that cleaning staff are trained, the method statement is followed, and all safety precautions are adhered to. Health & Safety Officer: Monitors compliance with safety regulations and conducts regular audits. Environmental Officer: Ensures that all environmental considerations are adhered to, particularly in the disposal of waste.

Procedure
Preparation: Wear appropriate PPE. Remove any food, utensils, and appliances from surfaces to be cleaned. Place warning signs (e.g., wet floor signs) in appropriate areas. Cleaning Steps: Surface Cleaning: Wipe down all countertops and tables using a disinfectant spray and microfiber cloth. Scrub stubborn stains with a non-abrasive scrub pad. Appliance Cleaning: Apply degreaser to ovens and stovetops; let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing. Clean microwave interiors with a suitable cleaner. Wipe down the exterior of refrigerators, ensuring handles and seals are cleaned. Sink Cleaning: Scrub the sink and faucets with a disinfectant cleaner. Ensure drains are clear and free of debris. Floor Cleaning: Sweep the floor to remove loose debris. Mop the floor using an appropriate floor cleaner, paying special attention to corners and under appliances. Utensils and Small Equipment: Wash all utensils and small equipment in hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher if available. Storage Areas: Clean shelves and cupboard interiors with a disinfectant cleaner. Reorganize items neatly after cleaning. Final Checks: Inspect all cleaned areas to ensure no spots were missed. Remove warning signs once the floor is dry. Dispose of waste and used cleaning materials appropriately.

Safety precautions
Always wear PPE when handling cleaning chemicals. Ensure good ventilation when using cleaning agents, particularly those with strong odors. Be cautious of wet floors to prevent slips and falls. Store cleaning chemicals securely and away from food preparation areas. Follow manufacturer instructions on all cleaning products to prevent misuse.

Emergency procedures
Chemical Spills: Contain and clean up spills immediately using appropriate materials. Report major spills to the supervisor. Accidents/Injuries: In case of an accident, provide first aid if trained and report to a supervisor. Seek medical attention for serious injuries. Fire: In the event of a fire, evacuate the area immediately and alert the fire department. Use fire extinguishers if trained and if safe to do so.

Environmental considerations
Dispose of cleaning waste according to local regulations, ensuring chemicals do not enter the water system. Use environmentally friendly cleaning agents where possible. Minimize water usage during the cleaning process. Recycle packaging and other materials where possible.

Training and competence
All cleaning staff must undergo training on the correct use of cleaning equipment and chemicals. Staff should be trained in the use of PPE and emergency procedures. Regular refresher training should be conducted to ensure competence is maintained.
