Dusting, damp wiping, washing and polish application - floors

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the procedures, responsibilities, and safety precautions for dusting, damp wiping, washing, and applying polish on floors. This ensures that all activities are carried out efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of cleanliness and maintenance.

This method statement applies to the cleaning and maintenance of all types of floor surfaces within the designated areas, including but not limited to hard floors, tiled floors, wooden floors, and vinyl floors. The scope includes dusting, damp wiping, washing, and polish application to enhance the appearance, longevity, and safety of the floors.

Site Supervisor/Manager: Ensures that all tasks are carried out according to the method statement, supervises the cleaning staff, and ensures all safety measures are followed.
Cleaning Staff: Perform the tasks as per the method statement, report any issues to the supervisor, and ensure the safe use of equipment and materials.
Health & Safety Officer: Provides necessary safety training, ensures all safety precautions are in place, and monitors compliance with safety regulations.

Equipment:
Dust mop or broom
Damp mop
Bucket and wringer
Floor scrubber (if necessary)
Wet vacuum or squeegee
Polish applicator
Materials:
Neutral floor cleaner
Water
Floor polish/wax
Microfiber cloths
Personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, etc.)

Dusting:
Use a dust mop or broom to remove loose dust and debris from the floor. Start from the farthest corner and work towards the exit to avoid stepping on cleaned areas.

Damp Wiping:
Prepare a solution of neutral floor cleaner and water as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Dip the mop into the solution, wring out excess water, and damp wipe the floor in a figure-eight motion. Ensure the mop is not too wet to avoid slipping hazards.

Washing:
For deeper cleaning, use a floor scrubber or mop with a stronger cleaning solution.
Scrub the floor thoroughly, paying special attention to heavily soiled areas.
Use a wet vacuum or squeegee to remove the dirty water from the floor.

Polish Application:
Ensure the floor is completely dry before applying polish.
Apply a thin, even layer of floor polish using a polish applicator or microfiber cloth. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying additional coats, if necessary.

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks.
Use wet floor signs to alert others of potential slip hazards.
Ensure proper ventilation in the area to avoid inhalation of fumes from cleaning chemicals and polish.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning products and equipment.
Avoid over-wetting the floor to prevent accidents and damage to floor materials.

In case of a chemical spill, follow the spill response plan and use spill kits if available.
For any injuries or accidents, provide first aid if trained and contact emergency services if necessary.
Evacuate the area immediately if there is a risk of fire, chemical reaction, or any other serious hazard.

Use environmentally friendly cleaning products where possible.
Dispose of waste water and cleaning solutions in accordance with local regulations.
Avoid using excessive water or chemicals to minimize environmental impact.
Recycle or properly dispose of used cleaning materials and containers.

All cleaning staff must receive training on the proper use of cleaning equipment, handling of chemicals, and the procedures outlined in this method statement.
Staff must be trained in safety protocols, including the use of PPE and emergency procedures.
Regular refresher training should be conducted to ensure ongoing competence.

The method statement should be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains up-to-date with current best practices and safety standards.
Supervisors should monitor the execution of tasks regularly to ensure compliance with the method statement.
